This is a topic I have with my clients a lot. Majority of my clients are families with little kids and come to my super kids minis sessions that I host every month. There’s a common belief that you should wait until kids are “old enough” to sit still, smile on cue, or follow directions before scheduling photos. But as a family photographer (and a mom who’s seen it all), I can tell you this with my whole heart: the earlier you start, the better.
Not because the photos will be perfect, but because they’ll be real.
Comfort Creates Confidence
Coming to a photoshoot of mine is more that just snapping some cute photos of kids (even though, let's face it, they are all adorable). It's about creating confidence and familiarity! Kids who grow up being photographed don’t see the camera as a big, scary interruption. It becomes familiar. Normal. Even fun.
When children are introduced to photos early, they learn:
- The camera isn’t something to perform for (this is big for me)
- They don’t have to be “on” or perfectly behaved
- They’re safe to be themselves
That comfort shows up later in the way they relax into sessions, trust the process, and show genuine emotion instead of stiff smiles. They warm up to me and heck, some kids will even run up and give me a hug asking what they get to do during the session!
You’re Preserving Seasons That Pass Quietly
The early years don’t announce themselves when they’re ending. One minute their favorite thing to do is carry around leaves in their pocket and the next month their collecting coins (yes, this one is a personal experience and she has a unicorn music box to store them all in).
One day the chubby hands are gone. The baby curls disappear. The way they fit perfectly on your chest becomes a memory you didn’t realize you were losing.
Photos from early childhood aren’t just keepsakes, they’re proof of how it felt.
The way they leaned into you
The softness of their expressions
The in-between moments you didn’t know you’d miss
Waiting often means skipping entire seasons that can never be recreated.
Kids Learn That They Matter
Kids learn this in many ways but this is another opportunity to build confidence, trust, and an internal dialogue! When kids come into a session, especially when they are new to me, my first thought is to connect to them in some way (usually through song). Also I just want to make them feel good and say things like "wow I can tell you are a hard worker" or "wow I saw how hard you worked to make your little sister feel happy" or "I love how big of a helper you are to mom!" This builds their world and their vision of themselves. When children see themselves photographed, truly seen, it sends a powerful message:
You are important. This moment matters. You matter.
They grow up seeing images of themselves loved, held, celebrated just as they were. That kind of representation quietly builds confidence and self-worth over time.
It Takes the Pressure Off Later
This has 100 percent helped me as a mom who loves to document the moments. As a parent, we worry that our toddler won’t cooperate or that our baby is “too young.” But here’s the secret:
Lifestyle photography isn’t about cooperation. I adapt to your child.
Lifestyle photography is about:
- Movement
- Connection
- Letting kids be kids
When you start early, you remove the pressure of needing perfect behavior later. Your kids already know what to expect and you know that magic doesn’t come from forced smiles.
The Photos Grow With Your Family
It's never too late to start. I will say this over and over again. When you document your family consistently, your gallery becomes a story instead of a single snapshot in time.
You’re not just taking photos...you’re building a visual legacy and memory box.
One day your kids won’t just see what they looked like.
They’ll see:
- How you held them
- How you laughed together
- How loved they were in every season
- What they loved, how they loved
With all of this to say, make the investment. I offer kids mini sessions every month at a reasonable rate to help get these kids in front of the camera and work on all of the above. If you’re ready to start documenting your family’s story, I’d love to help you do it in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and true to you.
